The Retroid Pocket Flip, is the latest retro gaming handheld from Retroid. While the competition may offer similar devices, the Retroid Pocket Flip sets itself apart in more ways than one. Not only does it feature a clamshell design, but it also offers something no other handheld does.

New Retroid Handheld

In the past year, the market has been inundated with a flood of retro gaming handheld consoles. With most of these consoles being released by the same companies, including the likes of Anberic and Retroid. However, Retroid has once again captured our attention with the release of the Retroid Pocket Flip, which presents some notable enhancements compared to its predecessor, the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus.

Now, I must admit that I initially anticipated the Retroid Pocket Flip to be a mere iteration of the Retro Pocket 3 Plus, and my excitement was relatively low. However, I was hugely surprised when I finally got my hands on the Retroid Pocket Flip. The Retroid Pocket Flip truly brings something entirely different to the table.

Retroid Pocket Flip Specs

Before we delve deeper into the console’s unique features, let’s address the technical specifications quickly. Priced at $164 on the official Go Retroite website, the Retroid Pocket Flip offers a range of stunning colors, including a limited Sport Red Edition, which is my personal favourite. The console boasts a powerful T618 processor, the same one found in the Retro Pocket 3 Plus and the RG405M. This processor enables great emulation capabilities, supporting games up to the PlayStation 1, N64, and Dreamcast. Additionally, the Retroid Pocket Flip delivers impressive GameCube emulation and decent PS2 emulation, similar to its predecessors. If you’re curious about the T618 processor’s emulation performance, I highly recommend checking out our Retro Pocket 3 Plus versus RG405M comparison videos. The Retro Pocket Flip offers nearly identical performance to those consoles.

The Retroid Pocket Flip is also equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack, USB 3, and Mini HDMI out, it provides compatibility with various devices and peripherals. Furthermore, the console features strategically placed speakers and unique air vents to ensure optimal cooling during extended gaming sessions.

Retroid Pocket Flip Design

As the name suggests, the Retroid Pocket Flip boasts a clamshell design, which not only enhances its visual appeal but also makes it incredibly pocket-friendly. The console’s aesthetics and design are brilliant. Despite initial concerns that the pre-renders might not do it justice, I can confidently say that the Sport Red version looks awesome. It feels as if you’re holding the Ferrari of retro gaming handheld consoles.

The Retroid Pocket Flip features a gorgeous 4.7-inch screen that occupies its own dedicated space, free from surrounding controls and triggers. This design choice enhances the viewing experience, showcasing games in all their glory. Moreover, the console’s mini laptop feel makes it ideal for leisurely watching TV shows or movies. Simply prop up the screen on your desk and enjoy a perfect mini cinema experience, free from the hassle of holding or balancing the console.

Retroid Pocket Flip Controls

Moving on to the lower half of the clamshell. While it lacks a secondary screen like the DS gaming enthusiasts might hope for, the Retroid Pocket Flip compensates with a great control layout. Building upon the success of the Retro Pocket 3 Plus, it retains the reliable D-pad and face buttons. However, the similarities end there.

Retroid Pocket Flip 3

The Retroid Pocket Flip introduces two new programmable buttons, M1 and M2, which prove invaluable for N64 and even Wii game emulation. Additionally, the shoulder buttons, R2 and L2, have been transformed into analog triggers. These analog triggers offer an incredibly smooth and comfortable experience, elevating the console to new heights. With these analog triggers, the Retro Pocket Flip opens up a world of possibilities for game streaming and modern games, particularly on platforms like Game Pass. The level of control and precision they provide enhances the console’s modern gaming capabilities, while still maintaining its essence as a retro gaming system.

Racing Handheld

But the true uniqueness of the Retroid Pocket Flip lies in its sliders. While initially met with scepticism by some due to their departure from traditional analog sticks, these sliders have are actually brilliant. Their implementation is the best I’ve seen yet, even offering L3 and R3 click functionality and providing the best slider experience seen on a console. While first-person shooters may still prove a bit tricker compared with traditional analog sticks, racing games are where the Retroid Pocket Flip truly shines. These sliders, combined with the analog triggers, deliver unparalleled control and fidelity. They perfectly emulate the feeling of gently steering a racing wheel, allowing for precise movements and an immersive racing experience. If you’re a racing game enthusiast, look no further than the Retroid Pocket Flip—it’s a game-changer in the handheld world.
