Playstation 5 News, Leaks, Rumours, Release Date and Next Gen Wishlist

Information about the next generation of console gaming is heating up. With the apparent leaking of information about the specs of the Playstation 5 and the Xbox 2, Xbox Scarlett or whatever you want to call it. As well as the building of a secret development studio in Sony and the rumour mill for the Playstation 5 is firing on all cylinders.

In amongst the speculation and possible information leaks some things are certain. And those certainties make one thing clear. There will definitely be a PS5.

So let’s start with the facts. Sony are putting together a not so secret “secret studio” and has been bulking up for a few months. Some of the studios latest sign ins are familiar faces from Naughty Dog and behind hits like Unchartered 4 and The Last Of Us.

Now just the fact that Sony is putting together a first party studio isn’t enough to make us think that the Playstation 5 is close. What does add weight to this is the fact that PS5 games are now the new focus for first-party devs.

According to a new analyst report all first part developers are now focusing on PS5 games! This is further backed up with a post on ResetEra by Daniel Ahmed that “PS5 dev kits are out there and I’ve heard positive things about them”.

This together with the secret first party development studio implies that Sony are working on their launch titles for the Playstation 5.

Playstation 5 Release Date

With all this info surely the Playstation 5 will be formally announced and therefore released soon. Honestly it’s hard to say.

We know that Sony have dropped out of E3 2019 most probably to focus on the PS5. That could mean two things. Maybe they are waiting until 2020 to make an appearance and announce the Playstation 5. I doubt it though.

Some rumours imply that Sony could be looking to do a small reveal in mid-2019 before showcasing the full console at the returning PlayStation Experience (PSX) event.

Now that’s got me excited! How cool would that be!? The idea that in just a few months we could be seeing what the PS5 looks like would be amazing! If I’m being totally honest the thing I’m most excited about is what the PlayStation 5 will look like!

Playstation 5 Release Date

So as we’re talking about speculation. Let’s speculate about the PS5. We know we are definitely going to get. But what improvements will the next generation PlayStation bring along with it? Here are my thoughts.

PS5 Graphics

There was a time when next gen consoles would promise primarily improved graphics and larger levels. In the early days the talk was always about what bit the console was. 8 bit to 16 bit, 16 bit to 32 bit. The increase in bits enabled sprites to be much more detailed. Then the jump was to 3D. Enabling environments to be explored in three dimensions. Then the jump was to more polygons, enabling 3D graphics to be smoother and more realistic.

PS5 VR

However, that doesn’t mean that Sony can’t think out of the box when it comes to the Playstation 5. Sony have already started trying to step into this world of new ways to play with the PS VR.

As great as the VR is there is still a lot of room for improvement. With the PlayStation 5 Sony could bring the VR experience to the front by improving their already pretty good formula. Reducing the use of wires and extra peripherals and increasing the resolution could be just a couple of improvements that would make the PS5 VR experience a great next gen feature.

How cool would it be if the PS5 came with a VR headset in the box!?

Keeping with the VR theme, something Sony could introduce with the Playstation 5 is mandating that all PS5 games have a VR component of some sort. This might sound crazy but if we think about the PS4, Sony mandated that all PS4 games were compatible with remote play in the PSVita. This shows Sony are willing to put requirements in place to support their other products and peripherals.

With the increasing size of games load times can be a real pain. Sure it’s eased by installing onto the hard disk but even then some games can be excruciatingly slow at loading, thus disrupting the immersion in the game.

A huge improvement the PS5 could bring is by incorporating a solid state drive. This would greatly increase load times and bring the PlayStation 5 at least partially up to modern gaming PC standards.

PS5 Backwards Compatability

I would love to see Sony bring some backwards compatibility with the PS5 even if it is in the form of emulation. With the quality of some of the emulators out there it wouldn’t be unimaginable to have PS1 and PS2 compatibility with the PS5. Although after Sony’s choice of emulator of the PlayStation Classic maybe this isn’t such a great idea. Besides they are probably planning a PlayStation 2 Classic down the line.
